Ever since I heard about the Bighorn Trail Run several years ago I knew I would one day run it. The photos of the wild and scenic canyons amid the Bighorn Mountains left me inspired. So, this year I decided to make it my A-race, train my butt off and take some extra time to explore the mountains after the run.

I was lucky enough to get a good patch of weather (after the race) and went about crisscrossing the range from Dayton to Buffalo. The wildflowers were in full bloom, the temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The 27-mile Cloud Peak Wilderness is the crown jewel of the range, snaking its way north-to-south and was definitely a highlight. For the adventurous backpackers and photographers alike, this is the place to go if you’re in north central Wyoming.
